The blogosphere is all about getting noticed and providing useful information. Blog operators need to know just when others have linked to their posts. This awareness allows them to keep track of just who is finding relevance in their blog. There is also the chance to forge connections with other bloggers that can prove mutually beneficial over time.

WordPress, understanding the need for such data, created a system of alerts to notify bloggers when someone has linked to one of their posts. These notifications, known as “pingbacks,” appear in the comments section of the blog. Upon receiving the pingback notification, the blogger can choose to accept the “comment,” which will then place it on their own blog for readers to see.

To a degree, pingbacks are form of advertising. Upon seeing many pingbacks, readers may come away with the impression that the blog is of importance. After all, others are citing its posts. Likewise, they also learn of the presence of the linking blog and thus might decide to visit it as well.

Despite the benefits of pingbacks, some find them a bit annoying. Popular bloggers may have their comment notification sections and email boxes filled with these announcements. Others may just not care if there has been a link to their blog.

So, here is how to disable WordPress pingbacks.

Stop Self-Pings

These happen when a blogger has enabled pingbacks and then they provide a link in their own posts. To avoid this from happening, quite simply truncate links, dropping the “http” portion.

Thus, http://example.wordpress.com/555/03/2/facebook becomes /555/03/2/facebook.

Disabling Individual Pingbacks

Go to the “Discussion Module,” which is on the “Add New Post” or “Edit Post” page. Unclick the box that says “allow trackbacks and pingbacks on this page.”

In some cases, the WordPress display will not have the “Discussion Module” visible. If so, then look for the Dashboard, in the upper-right of the screen. Upon clicking, “Screen Options,” a dropdown box appears with various choices. Click the “Discussion” box to make it visible. Then, proceed with the steps above to disable pingbacks.
